Michelangelo's David
Among the most famous statues in the world, Michelangelo's David is an extraordinary work that has fascinated and inspired admiration for centuries for its perfection.
To reconstruct the history and value of sculpture as a symbol of all time, but also preserving the strong link with the history of the Florentine Republic, I propose a guided tour through the places of the city that preserve the memory of David.
Academy Gallery: the original statue of David by Michelangelo
The tour begins with the Accademia Gallery, the museum where the original statue is kept together with other of the artist's renown works in marble. The museum constitutes a great attraction for visitors to Florence, especially because of the Michelangelo's David. In the main gallery on the ground floor can be seen the four Slaves or 'Prisoners' which were begun for the tomb of Pope Julius II which Michelangelo never finished and they were given to the Medici in 1564. They are magnificent examples of Michelangelo's unfinished works, the famous non-finito, much discussed by scholars. At the end of the gallery is the colossal statue of David, some 5 meters high, now perhaps the most famous single work of art in western civilization which has become something of a cult image.
Duomo square
The visit of the Accademy is followed by a stroll to the Piazza del Duomo, where the statue was carved in the workshop and where you will discover the reason for which it was originally commissioned.
Signoria square
Finally, we'll go to the Piazza della Signoria, which once symbolized the pride of Florentine liberty.
